If you have no equipment at the moment then the "SIX BOTTLE WINE OR LIQUEUR BEGINNERS PACK" is the easiest option. The equipment is suitable for making single gallon batches of wine, liqueur or spirit kits.
If you are intending to make liqueur or spirit kits I'd also recommend buying the following items:
TRIAL JAR FOR HYDROMETER
BUCKET 16 litres for mixing ingredients
With wine please bear in mind that when you make wine in single gallons you might well find that by the time you have drunk a few bottles you will need to start thinking about making another batch whereas with 5 gallon production you have a much greater buffer and the wine is considerably cheaper, nearly half price! For 5 gallon production see the "WINE BEGINNERS 5g EQUIPMENT STARTER KIT".
If you want to stay with single gallons for the time being you will need to choose a wine kit to suit your taste, you'll find these in the "Wine kits - 6 bottle size" section of our web site.
All of the wine, liqueur or spirit kits that we stock come complete with any necessary processing sachets such as yeast, nutrients, enzymes, stabilisers and finings.
The starter kit contains the hardware you will need to make the wine, however some wine kit manufacturers suggest using a second vessel to assist clearing and so you can purchase a further PET PLASTIC DEMIJOHN if you wish although many of our customers make these kits perfectly successfully without using a second fermenter, i.e. they carry out the entire process, through to a clear wine, in one fermenter.
You might also want to consider how you would like to store the finished wine. It is not a good idea to leave the finished wine in the fermenting vessel as it will still be sitting on the yeast and will therefore start to pick-up unwanted flavours after a while, also if you draw off some of the wine air will have to enter the fermenter to replace the wine, this can introduce spoilage bacteria and will once again adversely affect the taste of the wine.
The easiest approach to storage is to use the "10 LITRE WINE BOX DISPENSER Bag-in-Box". Each dispenser takes up to 12 bottles of wine and they are totally re-usable. It is a bag in a box and the bag collapses as the wine is dispensed so you never get air back into the system, thus your wine stays in good condition.
The other way to store is of course by bottling. You can re-cycle commercial wine bottles by cleaning them thoroughly with the cleaner/steriliser (in the starter kit) and then cork the bottles to seal. For this I would recommend our "SUPER QUALITY CORKS", these are silicone treated and are therefore easy to insert with a corking machine. To insert the corks you can either use a simple device such as the "PLASTIC MINI HAND CORKING MACHINE" or if you wish to make life easier you can use the "TWO-LEVER HAND CORKING MACHINE".
If you want to dress the bottles we have a wide range of labels and shrink capsules which go over the cork just like the capsules you see on commercial bottles of wine.
If you would like to be more accurate with your winemaking you might also wish to buy a "SPIRIT THERMOMETER".
Although not essential at this stage later on you might like to start measuring the specific gravity of you wine so that you can determine it's dryness and calculate how much sugar to add to sweeten it if necessary. If so you would need a "WINE & BEER HYDROMETER" and a "TRIAL JAR FOR HYDROMETERS". To directly measure the final alcohol in the wine you can use a "GLASS VINO-O-METER FOR ALCOHOL MEASUREMENT".
All of these items can be found by using the "Search" button on our site.
I'd suggest starting your winemaking using the wine kits mentioned above so that you learn the essentials. If you want to be more adventurous at a later stage you will then at least have the necessary basic knowledge of winemaking to draw on. You will not need any books to get started as sufficient information will be supplied, however there are several books on country winemaking on our site, in the "Books" section, should you wish to go down that more complex route at a later stage.
Hope this helps!
